Women’s Network Business Profile

Company Name: Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital (Truman VA)

How long have you been in business?

Truman VA opened in 1972.

What does your company do? Is it different from what it originally set out to do?

Truman VA provides health care-related services to approximately 40,000 Veterans across 44 Missouri counties, as well as Pike County, Illinois. The care we provide includes inpatient, outpatient, and surgical services at our main campus in Columbia, Missouri. We also offer outpatient care at nine community-based clinics in Jefferson City, Kirksville, Marshfield, Mexico, Osage Beach, Sedalia, St. James, Waynesville, and Columbia.

What is your company’s mission or vision?

The VA’s mission is “To fulfill President Lincoln’s promise to care for those who have served in our nation’s military and for their families, caregivers, and survivors.”

As an academic health center and high reliability organization, Truman VA empowers Veterans through partnership. Our vision is to move beyond simply treating illness by providing personalized, proactive, and patient-driven care in an environment of excellence.

Who do you work with or seek to serve? Who are you best-fit customers?

We are proud to serve our nations Veterans.

If your company didn’t exist, what would your customers do?

The Veterans Health Administration is the largest integrated health care system in the country. More than 9 million U.S. Veterans currently are enrolled in VA and eligible to receive health care, to include more than 600,000 women Veterans. VA also serves more than 50,000 Veteran caregivers and more than 600,000 Veteran survivors. Without VA, this level of support for our nation’s heroes would be non-existent.

What features or capabilities do you have that other companies don’t:

The VA has three core strengths that distinguish its services from those of the private sector when caring for Veterans:

  • Systemwide clinical expertise regarding service-connected conditions and disorders.
  • A team approach to primary care that is Veteran-centric.
  • A holistic view of Veterans that includes physical, psychosocial, and economic determinants of health, as well as critical support services for family members and caregivers.

As a result, VA brings together comprehensive expertise on service-connected health issues in a single health care system. Our clinicians are trained to identify, assess, and treat a wide spectrum of health issues.
